A teammate finds a promising channel. It looks familiar, and an old email explains why: you worked with the creator six months ago, under a different name. The reverse mistake is possible too. A similar name and avatar convince someone to attach an old partnership to a channel that has never worked with your brand.

**Verify the channel first, update the current display name second, and preserve the connection between the old and new names.** A changed handle should prompt an identity check before anyone creates a blank partnership record or attaches existing history to it.

## Recover the evidence from the original partnership

Start with the delivery email, accepted content, or recorded channel URL from the previous campaign. Retrieve the channel ID too, if your team saved it. Put the old evidence beside the current channel information without overwriting either.

Look for something that connects the original work to the channel you see now: the channel that published the delivered video, a previously recorded channel ID, or a name-change confirmation from the established contact.

OneCrew helps teams organize creator information, recorded conversations, and partnership follow-up. Ask your AI assistant to use OneCrew to retrieve the original email thread and collect the channel URL, name used at the time, and delivered content. Add the pending identity check to the existing creator's notes while retaining the earlier details. That gives the team a clear reference for the investigation.

## Separate the channel name, handle, and ID

A YouTube display name, an `@handle`, and a channel ID are different pieces of information. YouTube distinguishes handles from channel names, and its ID-based channel URL uses a unique channel ID. Several URL formats can also lead to the same channel. A URL in the form `youtube.com/@handle` and one in the form `youtube.com/channel/CHANNEL_ID` can therefore look different without representing different channels. Comparing the address text alone is insufficient.

| ------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| The old and current records match the same channel ID | Record the channel's name or handle change; confirm current contacts and commercial terms separately |
| An old URL opens a current channel, but the ID has not been checked | Save the result and continue with an ID check or confirmation through the established contact |
| Only the name or avatar looks familiar | Keep the match unconfirmed and do not attach the old partnership yet |
| The IDs differ, and the creator says they opened another channel | Keep both channel identities and ask which one future work will use |

A matching channel ID establishes the channel connection. It does not establish that the manager, email address, or partnership terms are unchanged. Confirm those details on their own merits.

Verify the channel before connecting its new name to past work.

## Ask the original contact when the evidence is incomplete

If you already have the channel ID, open its saved ID-based URL and check the current presentation. If you only have a handle or a content link, ask the established contact for the current channel address and its ID-based URL.

YouTube's primary channel owner can find the channel ID in advanced account settings while signed in. Ask them to provide the ID or the corresponding channel URL. [YouTube's channel ID instructions](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/3250431?hl=en&ref=blog.onecrewai.io)

If the old link no longer works, a familiar avatar, biography, or video style remains a clue rather than a confirmed match. Continue the existing email thread to ask about it, instead of sharing the old partnership history with a newly found address.

Use a concise confirmation request:

> Hi \[name\],
>
> While reviewing \[previous campaign\], we found a channel now using \[new name or handle\]. Could you confirm whether this is the same channel we worked with under \[old name and URL\]?
>
> If it is a name change, could you send the current channel URL and its ID-based URL? If it is a separate channel, please clarify how we should record the two channels and which one you would use for future collaborations.
>
> Could you also confirm whether you are still the right contact for partnership discussions? We'll update our record based on your reply.

OneCrew can help prepare this draft using the recorded thread and confirmed contact route. When reviewing it, keep an uncertain match phrased as a question. The message should not convert “this might be the same creator” into a fact.

## Update the current name while preserving the old one

Once the same-channel match is confirmed, update the current display name. Keep the previous name in the notes so teammates working from older emails, campaign sheets, or quotes can find the same relationship.

Use this change record:

- **Previous name and handle:** which partnership used them.
- **Current name and URL:** the verified information.
- **Channel ID or ID-based URL:** the value checked.
- **Confirmation evidence:** the established contact's reply date or channel record used.
- **Checked by and checked on:** who verified the change and when.
- **Other changes awaiting confirmation:** contact person, email address, or channel for future work.

OneCrew supports updating a creator's display name and notes. Ask the AI assistant to read the current notes first, preserve the existing partnership details, and incorporate the confirmed name-change record. Review the saved result to make sure the old name remains in that record and no historical terms have been rewritten.

If the creator confirms a separate channel, keep the old and new channel information distinct and note the relationship they described. Assess the new channel's audience and content using current evidence. A previous collaboration is useful background, but the old channel's performance figures do not become the new channel's figures.

## Make the history recognizable before the next outreach

The next teammate approaching the creator under the new name should be able to see the previous name and partnership. If the team also needs to prevent two people contacting the same creator, use the [pre-send duplicate outreach checklist](https://blog.onecrewai.io/en/prevent-duplicate-influencer-outreach/) to coordinate ownership.

For the name change itself, start with the original conversation in OneCrew. Recover the channel evidence, verify the match, then update the current name while preserving the change record. Your next conversation can continue from the right history, with unresolved identity questions kept visible.
